Tameside Borough

Tameside: A place where you can achieve your hopes and ambitions.

Tameside is a unique place with a wealth of culture, history, and heritage. Forged strong and honest we are proud of the sights, sounds and foundations that make it a great place to live, work, invest and visit.

From the canals that run through our streets, to the industrial cotton mills that form our skyline, and the greenery weaved through our nine towns. Each bring unique characteristics to our story and strengthen the makeup of our Borough.

Located just 12 minutes from Manchester City Centre yet nestled in the foothills of the Peak District; we’re urban opportunity and rural tranquillity, Tameside offers the best of both worlds. Our central location means we are well-connected with excellent local transport links and being near the M60 and M62, means our town centres and industrial hubs have easy access across the region. By rail, the local towns are just a train ride to nearby cities and Northern Powerhouse with Manchester Airport just a twenty-minute drive away.

Graft, integrity, and innovation are in our blood, part of who we are, teamed with loyalty, honesty, pride, these strong ethics make us do-ers. Our fantastic businesses of all sizes are testimonial to that. Combining top digital technology with amazing community spirit means we’ve become home to a wide range of businesses which include national and international brands such as Brother, the Hyde Group, and Kerry Foods.

Our percentage of small to medium size businesses is higher than the North West average, and our range of artisanal craft and produce markets display our enterprising spirit. We’re makers at heart, with creative businesses based on the ethics of honesty and loyalty. With a strong manufacturing tradition, particularly in the areas of textiles and innovate advanced engineering, food industries and of advanced manufacturing of chemical, electronic and computer products.

Our forefathers of philanthropy gave the people of the borough libraries and public bath houses. Fast forward a couple of centuries and we’re now turning those Old Baths into state-of-the-art digital hubs for start-up businesses to prosper and grow. We’ve even brought cotton spinning back to the U.K. with English Fine Cottons in Tower Mill putting ‘Made in Britain’ back on the map.

We want to showcase our borough make our towns strong again and drive economic prosperity to help make the changes we need for the future. Not only that we want to capitalise on the abundance of cultural attractions we house, steeped in history, creativity, and culture. We want to build on their strengths and continue to create events and spaces that bring our communities together and generate even more civic pride.

Building on solid foundations, we have strong knit communities, exceptional healthcare services and a range of affordable housing to boot so it’s the perfect place to start and grow a family.

Education is vital, and especially important to us, we’re not leaving the next generation behind, we want them to be the strong foundations of our future. With a host of Outstanding Primary and Secondary schools, we’re looking to boost future generations to carry on our hardworking tradition by giving them the skills and support to be more.

The borough hosts one of the top FE colleges in the country supporting a thriving student population and Manchester’s universities are connected and within easy reach. Our three Advanced Learning Centres feature innovative laboratories and kit to ensure our students are prepared to take on high skilled jobs in key growth sectors.

We’re not resting on our laurels though we are always striving for improvement and putting in the work to take Tameside forward into the future and home growing skills.

Being part of the Greater Manchester family means we understand the importance of collaboration. Partnership helps us get things done, with successes like Vision Tameside and Tameside Wellness Centre and Ashton Old Baths are evidence of the efforts we are making for the future.

Tameside is still changing with more projects and plans on the horizon. Funding from Government is helping us level up our towns with plans in place to look to regenerate our town centres to create opportunities and improvements for our residents and visitors alike. In Ashton we are looking to transform the Market Square, creating public spaces which will bring people together and add more greenery making it a place to be proud of.

We are working with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority as well as public and private sector partners to shape the plans that can continue to set our longer-term plans. Joining together our aspirations and pooling resources to create a stronger future through the Ashton Mayoral Development Zone. Significant investment is already underway, key employment and mixed use developments such as St Petersfield and Ashton Moss Innovation Park, our work on our town centre masterplans, and infrastructure programmes will continue to improve our connectivity across the region and beyond.

We aren’t leaving our other town centres behind, Stalybridge has begun its journey with funding making improvements to the heritage assets that make the town unique, being the Town of Culture in 2022 gave us the opportunity to shine a light on and raise the profile or the town and building on the success by building on the events that made that year a truly special year and show just how much culture our towns hold, Stalybridge Street Fest has become a core event for the borough. Hyde now has a brand-new vision and strategy for the future and some funding to kick start the plans, but we are widening our net and looking to bring in partners on board that have our values that can support those plans and help to make them a reality. Persistence is something we have in spades, and we excel at teamwork.

We are aspirational and determined to be the best-connected Borough in the UK with access to world class digital infrastructure so that we can ensure access for all businesses, residents, and services public services to help the, transform.

We care about our people, and we take pride in knowing they’re supported every step of the way, whatever their goals or challenges we will help them endure. We know where we’ve come from, and we know where we’re going.
